Management Plan 2000

Purpose: 

To continue rehabilitating and revegetating the Wetlands strip on the Newton Moore Senior High School site, and to monitor the rehabilitation. 

  1. Monitor water quality in ponds by doing seasonal checks on water and pond life. Include monthly testing of pH, phosphate, nitrate and oxygen levels, temperature, turbidity and conductivity. 
  2. Introduce testing of ammonia due to vicinity of septic tank and the algal bloom in September 1999. 
  3. Research breeding habits of native fish, the Western Pygmy Perch and restock wetlands with native fish. Apply for funding from Fisheries Department. 
  4. Liaise with Ribbons of Blue co-ordinator Brendan Kelly with our wetlands conditions index on aquatic invertebrates, join in activities like Snapshot Day, Wetlands Day and sample macro-invertebrates monthly. 
  5. Apply to CALM for license Regulation 17 for 2000 to trap and continue to record data on frog species in the wetlands.
  6. Continue to collect seeds in February, March, November and December and germinate them. Obtain extra seedlings from Iluka Resources Ltd and Leschenault Community Nursery. 
  7. Plant more native sedges around pond areas. Plant wetland trees around the perimeter. 
  8. Register with Florabase, http://www.calm.wa.gov.au (WA Herbarium), and continue to identify native and exotic plant species. 
  9. Remove more pampas grass and buffalo grass. 
  10. Excavate another pond around Modong trail to help alleviate flooding in winter and seek advice and help from Iluka Resources. 
  11. Identify and keep records of any birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates observed in the area. 
  12. Remove litter and rubbish dumped in the area. 
  13. Continually update our ‘Wetland Research Centre’ in the classroom. Include reference books, CD’s, photo albums and a herbarium. 
  14. Develop field guides on exotic plants and weeds, and aquatic invertebrates.
  15.  Encourage the neighbouring Primary school to participate in activities. Invite the Primary school to help with tree planting and share our resources (field guides, water testing equipment). 
  16. Continue to inform the school and the community of the importance of our school wetland strip and of our progress through local newspapers, daily notices and the school magazine. 
  17. Update our web page  or rebuild a new web page. 
  18. Use trends in 2000 data to help reassess status of the wetlands and modify our action plan for 2001.

  11. Build up Modong trail with soil from frog hollow area supporting it with railway sleepers.
  12. Re establish drainage to reduce flooding
  13. Liase with Adam road primary school, the community and Iluka resources LTD. And complete a drain from Northern end into five mile brook. 
  14. Continue with weed control. 
  15. Identify and keep records of any birds, mammals, reptiles observed in the area. 
  16. Remove litter and rubbish dumped in the area.

Management Plan 2002

Purpose:

Continue to rehabilitate and research the Wetlands strip on the Newton Moore Senior High School site.

  1. Continue and improve our captive breeding program of the Western Pygmy Perch and restock wetlands and neighbouring wetlands with native fish.
  2. Monitor water quality in ponds by doing seasonal checks on water and pond life. Include monthly testing of pH, phosphate, nitrate and oxygen levels, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, ammonia and macro invertebrates.
  3. Apply for Waste Wise Youth Group to fund filter system.
  4. Design, test and construct a suitable chemical and biological filter system and install the filter to the drainage pipe at Koopoolang pond.
  5. Paint clean water only signs on paving near school drains to inform people where the water is going. “Clean Water Only” logos.
  6. Remove gambusia from areas where western pygmy perch are going to be released.
  7. Deepen Koopoolang pond to ensure water is always present.
  8. Plant more native sedges around pond areas. Plant wetland trees around the perimeter.
  9. Extend the buffer zone of the wetlands and reduce weed encroachment from wetlands fence to the logs barrier using wads of newspaper and mulch.
  10. Design and construct an information board at wetlands entrance.
  11. Apply to CALM for license regulation 17 for 2002 to trap and continue to record data on frog species in the wetlands.
  12. Continue to collect seeds to province plant. Obtain extra seedlings from Iluka Resources ltd and Leschenault Community Nursery.
